April 5, 2005 is sure to be an unforgettable day for Eloy Casagrande Lopes. On that day he was named the winner of Modern Drummer’s Undiscovered Drummer contest. 14 year old Eloy was born in Santo Andre, Spain on January 29, 1991. When he was 6 years old, his parents began to nurture his musical talents. Since then it has been a lot of practice and learning, under the guidance of many teachers. His playing has been recognized by many professional drummers and he has been invited to play on many television shows such as É Show on Rede Record, numerous shows on Rede Globo, Super Pop on Rede TV and Domingo Legal on Rede SBT.
Currently, Eloy is taking drum classes with Aquiles Priester of Angra, another Mapex endorser, and practices intensely every day. At his young age, it is hard to find other serious musicians around his age. He hopes to someday be in a band and play around the world. This May, Eloy is going to own the stage with Mapex at the Modern Drummer festival. Eloy plays Mapex drums and is also a loyal user of Janus pedals. According to his teacher, Aquiles Priester, Eloy has been using his Janus pedals for a long time now and loves them. Mapex and Janus are proud to provide Eloy with gear that helps him feel confident and lets him focus on his playing. Newark, NJ — The Modern Drummer Festival took place over the holiday weekend at the NJ Performing Arts Center. Drumming fans from all over the country came to see legendary players display their chops. Among the players was Chris Adler from Lamb of God, who was recently voted the “Best Up and Coming Drummer” in the Modern Drummer Reader Poll. Chris played a Mapex Saturn kit for the festival and showed off his lightning fast hands and feet. He performed several Lamb of God songs with the accompaniment of his band mate and brother, Willie Adler, on guitar.
Chris’ drumming was impressive, and his communication skills really thrilled the crowd. During his performance, Chris told of how he started drumming at the age of 22, long after most people start playing. He described how never being formally trained has actually served to his advantage. "The nice thing about having never taking a drum lesson,” he said, "is that if I screw up, I don’t really know any better." The crowd was charmed by Chris who stressed to them that drumming is about having fun. It’s not about what you can do. It’s about having fun with what you can do. Chris was the buzz of the show. Attendees both young and old were amazed with his talent both as a drummer and a storyteller. During the question and answer period of Chris' session, one gentlemen said he had no idea that a metal drummer could be so well spoken and eloquent and owed the heavy metal drumming community an apology.
Another performance that had people talking was that of 14-year-old Eloy Eloy Casagrande Lopes. The young Brazilian was named Best Unknown Drummer Under 18 by Modern Drummer. Mapex Drums supplied Eloy with a Saturn kit, and during his soundcheck and performance, he showed what he was capable of doing. Eloy blew the crowd away with his incredible hand and foot speed and remarkable sense of rhythm. "I don’t know about you,” said Rick Van Horn, Senior Editor of Modern Drummer, " but I certainly couldn't play like that when I was 14. I am not sure I can play like that now." After a year away, the festival returned to the beautiful and spacious New Jersey Performing Arts Center in Newark. The venue featured outstanding acoustics and an enormous stage area. After carefully screening hundreds of entries from around the world, MD's editors have selected fourteen-year-old Elóy Casagrande of Sao Paulo, Brazil as the winner in the eighteen-and-under division, and twenty-year-old Jon Willlis of Santa Barbara, California as the winner in the over-eighteen division.
Honorable mention in the eighteen-and-under division goes to David Cifelli of Stockton, New Jersey, Steve Renko of Euclid, Ohio, and Mark Banner of Los Angeles, California. Noteworthy entrants in the over-eighteen division include Pascal LePage of Quebec, Canada, Fernando Mendoza of Morelia, Mexico, and Joe Babiak of Arlington Heights, Illinois.

Elóy Casagrande Lopes, aluno da 8ª série do Colégio Arbos, toca bateria desde os seis anos de idade e durante sua trajetória musical, já acumula prêmios de deixar muita gente grande com inveja. No ano passado, ganhou o Batuka Internacional Drummer Fest, maior festival nacional para bateristas novos, na categoria até 13 anos.
No início do mês de abril deste ano, Elóy ganhou o Modern Drummer's Undiscovered Drummer Contest, o maior evento para baterista do mundo, realizado nos Estados Unidos e considerado o berço desses músicos. Elóy é o primeiro baterista não americano na história do festival a ganhar o prêmio. Por isso, no próximo dia 28 de maio, Elóy irá abrir o Festival Modern Drummer in Undiscovered Contest 2005, em New Jersey (EUA), tocando para uma platéia de aproximadamente 10 mil pessoas, onde estarão os maiores bateristas da atualidade.

Eloy, de apenas 13 anos, concorreu com bateristas do mundo todo, venceu na categoria até 18 anos e se apresentará no dia 28 de maio, fazendo a abertura do evento. Na próxima quinta-feira, 26 de maio, Aquiles Priester embarca para Newark (New Jersey - EUA) para acompanhar seu aluno Elóy Casagrande durante sua apresentação no Modern Drummer Festival 2005. Elóy concorreu com bateristas do mundo todo, venceu na categoria até 18 anos e se apresentará no dia 28 de maio, fazendo a abertura do evento. Elóy já havia ganho o Festival Batukinha de 2004, que é organizado por Vera Figueiredo.
O baterista Elóy Casagrande Lopes, 13 anos, de São Caetano, vai deixar muito marmanjão de queixo caído. Ele vai abrir o maior evento de bateria do mundo, o Modern Drummer's Undiscovered Drummer Contest, no próximo dia 28, em New Jersey, nos Estados Unidos. "Fiquei muito feliz ao ser escolhido. Mandei um vídeo com uma apresentação de 2 minutos para a seleção do festival. Não acreditava na minha própria capacidade", conta Elóy, que venceu o concurso de bateristas revelação menores de 18 anos. No ano passado, o garoto também foi o vitorioso do Batuka Internacional Drummer Fest, para bateristas até 13 anos.
Desde que soube da escolha, há mais de um mês, o garoto passou a treinar quatro horas por dia. "Tenho de tocar bem. No festival, vão estar quase 10 mil pessoas, além dos melhores bateristas do mundo", fala Elóy, que lembra que tudo vale a pena quando se gosta do que se faz. "Quem tem um sonho tem de lutar por ele. Só assim será feliz." O baterista sempre recebeu apoio dos pais, que desde cedo notaram seu talento. "Não foi fácil. Precisei ser considerado o melhor do mundo (na sua categoria) para provar a todos que eu gosto mesmo é de tocar bateria.
